Ford BlueCruise
Hands-free highway driving on 97% of controlled-access roads in the US and Canada—including I-75, I-69, I-94, and US-23 right here in Southeast Michigan. Available on the 2026 F-150, Explorer, Expedition, F-150 Lightning, and Mustang Mach-E. Consumer Reports' top-rated active driving assistance system.
What Is
BlueCruise?
BlueCruise is Ford's hands-free highway driving system. When your vehicle enters a pre-mapped section of divided highway—called a Blue Zone—you can remove your hands from the steering wheel and let BlueCruise handle steering, acceleration, and braking automatically.
It is not self-driving technology. You must remain attentive and keep your eyes on the road—an infrared driver-facing camera monitors your gaze and will disengage the system if you look away. But within those parameters, BlueCruise turns your daily I-75 or US-23 commute from a grind into something significantly less fatiguing.
- Hands-free steering, braking, and acceleration on pre-mapped divided highways across the US and Canada
- Driver-facing infrared camera monitors your eyes—if you look away, the system warns you and disengages if needed
- Lane Change Assist—tap the turn signal and BlueCruise handles the lane change hands-free
- In-Lane Repositioning—automatically shifts you away from large trucks in adjacent lanes
- Automatic Lane Change (BlueCruise 1.5)—available on 2026 Explorer, changes lanes for you without steering wheel input
- Over-the-air software updates—BlueCruise improves automatically on eligible vehicles

Your Daily Drive
Is a Blue Zone.
BlueCruise works on 97% of controlled-access highways in the US and Canada—and Southeast Michigan has some of the best coverage in the country. The roads you drive every day, from Fenton to Flint, from Fenton to Detroit, from Fenton Up North—are Blue Zones. That means every time you get on the highway for your commute or a road trip, BlueCruise is ready to work.
This is especially relevant in Michigan, where long highway stretches between cities are the norm and driver fatigue on multi-hour commutes is a real issue. BlueCruise was designed precisely for this type of driving.
Ford uses an interactive Blue Zone map at ford.com/technology/bluecruise—you can enter any Michigan route and confirm it is covered before you purchase. Every major divided highway in SE Michigan is in the database. You can also ask Lasco Ford to demonstrate BlueCruise on a test drive on US-23 or I-75.
SE Michigan Blue Zone Highways
Fenton to Flint, Flint to Detroit, Pontiac to the bridge—the most-used BlueCruise corridor in SE Michigan
Fenton to Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor north toward Brighton and Hartland—prime daily commuter route
Flint to Lansing corridor—popular for commuters and weekend trips across mid-Michigan
Detroit to Ann Arbor and beyond—SE Michigan's primary east-west highway, fully mapped
Detroit metro loop and westbound corridor toward Grand Rapids—long, straight, and ideal for BlueCruise
Oakland and Macomb County east-west connector—covered for hands-free commuting
How to Activate
BlueCruise
Activating BlueCruise is straightforward once it has been set up through the Ford app. Here is the full process from initial setup to hands-free driving.
Activate via Ford App
Download the Ford app and add your vehicle. If your vehicle includes a trial or active plan, BlueCruise will appear under Connected Services. Enable it and set up your account. Lasco Ford's team can walk you through this at delivery—ask us to help you get it set up before you leave the lot.
Enable in Vehicle Settings
In your vehicle's center screen, go to Settings → Driver Assistance → Adaptive Cruise Control → Lane Centering with Hands-Free and toggle it on. You can also enable Lane Change Assist and In-Lane Repositioning from this menu. Takes about 60 seconds to configure.
Enter a Blue Zone
Get on a mapped divided highway. When your vehicle enters a Blue Zone, a prompt appears on your instrument cluster letting you know BlueCruise is available. Your adaptive cruise control must already be engaged. The blue Hands-Free indicator lights up when you are ready to go hands-free.
Let Go of the Wheel
Tap the Adaptive Cruise Control button on your steering wheel, confirm Lane Centering is on, and release the wheel. BlueCruise handles steering, acceleration, and braking. The driver-facing camera monitors your eyes—keep looking at the road. If you look away, the system prompts you. Tap the brake or turn signal at any time to resume normal driving.
Hands Off.
Eyes Forward.
The first time you take your hands off the wheel at highway speed and feel the F-150 holding its lane and matching traffic on its own, it is a noticeable experience. Not because it is dramatic—it is not—but because of how effortless it becomes after the first few minutes.
The practical result for Michigan commuters is arriving in Flint, Detroit, or Ann Arbor less fatigued than you left. The practical result for Up North drivers is that the long stretch of US-23 or I-75 turns from something you endure into something that feels almost like rest. That is the real value proposition of BlueCruise—not the technology itself, but what it does to how you feel at the destination.

BlueCruise vs.
Super Cruise
In a region with as many GM vehicles as SE Michigan, this comparison comes up constantly. Here is an honest side-by-side based on published data and independent testing—not just Ford marketing.
| Ford BlueCruise | GM Super Cruise | |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer Reports Score | 84 / 100Best Rated | 75 / 100 |
| IIHS Safety Safeguards | Strongest-rated safeguardsIIHS Best | Middling marks |

Bottom line for SE Michigan buyers: Super Cruise covers more mapped miles and works while towing—two real advantages if you do a lot of long-distance highway driving or regularly tow a trailer. BlueCruise earns higher safety scores, is available on far more mainstream trim levels at lower price points, and now has the one-time purchase option. For most SE Michigan commuters and families, BlueCruise on the F-150 or Explorer is the more accessible and more practical choice—especially at the XLT or Lariat price point where Super Cruise typically is not offered at all.
BlueCruise
FAQ
Does my current Ford already have BlueCruise?
Many 2022–2025 F-150, Explorer, Expedition, Mach-E, and Lightning owners already have the BlueCruise hardware installed in their vehicle—they just have not activated it yet. The fastest way to check is to go to the Connected Services tile in your Ford Account app. If BlueCruise appears there, your vehicle is capable. You can also call Lasco Ford at (810) 390-5550 and give us your VIN—we can tell you in under a minute. If your vehicle does not have BlueCruise hardware, it cannot be retrofitted—it must be factory-equipped.
Can I try BlueCruise before buying or committing to a plan?
Yes, two ways. First, every new BlueCruise-equipped Ford comes with a 90-day complimentary trial—no cost, no credit card, starts automatically with your warranty start date. This is plenty of time to decide whether BlueCruise fits your driving habits and whether the one-time purchase or an annual plan makes sense for your situation. Second, Lasco Ford can demonstrate BlueCruise on a test drive. Ask us specifically when scheduling your test drive and we will route the drive to include a Blue Zone stretch so you can experience it firsthand before purchasing.
Is BlueCruise self-driving? Can I sleep or look at my phone?
No. BlueCruise is a Level 2 driver assistance system—not self-driving technology. You must remain attentive at all times with your eyes on the road. The driver-facing infrared camera actively monitors your gaze and will issue a warning if you look away. If you do not respond to the warning, BlueCruise disengages and returns control to you. You cannot legally or safely use BlueCruise as a substitute for attentive driving. What it does allow is hands-free operation while you remain alert—which meaningfully reduces physical fatigue on long highway stretches without removing the responsibility of monitoring the road.
What happens if I drive outside a Blue Zone?
When you leave a Blue Zone—approaching an exit ramp, an intersection, or a non-mapped section of road—BlueCruise automatically prompts you to place your hands back on the wheel before disengaging. The system gives you advance warning before requiring you to take control, so the transition is not abrupt. Standard adaptive cruise control and lane centering can still remain active outside Blue Zones, just without the hands-free capability. In practical terms, if you are driving I-75 from Fenton to Flint, you will be in a Blue Zone for nearly the entire stretch and will only be prompted to take control when you approach your exit.
Can I add BlueCruise to a Ford I already own that does not have it?
No. BlueCruise requires specific factory-installed hardware including the enhanced forward-facing camera, radar calibration hardware, and an updated ECU. This hardware cannot be added after the vehicle leaves the factory. If your current Ford does not have it, the only way to get BlueCruise is to purchase or order a new vehicle with the hardware included. This is why it is important to specifically confirm BlueCruise hardware is on the window sticker when ordering or purchasing a new Ford—on some trims, it must be selected as an option at order time and cannot be added later. Lasco Ford's team will help you confirm this before you sign.
Which is the best value way to pay for BlueCruise?
If you plan to keep your Ford for four or more years, the one-time purchase at $2,495 is almost always the best financial decision. Seven years of annual renewals at $495 would cost $3,465—nearly $1,000 more than buying it outright. The one-time purchase can also be rolled into your vehicle financing, which spreads the cost across your monthly payment and may be barely noticeable in your payment structure. If you are unsure how much you will use BlueCruise, the 90-day free trial is the smart first step—use it daily, then decide. For drivers who only need BlueCruise occasionally (road trips, vacation drives), the $49.99 monthly plan lets you turn it on for just the months you need it.
How does BlueCruise affect my Ford warranty?
BlueCruise is a factory-equipped, Ford-engineered system sold through Ford Motor Company—using it does not affect your vehicle warranty in any way. It is covered under the same terms as other Ford technology features. The one-time purchase option is specifically tied to a vehicle VIN, not to your person, and the service is warranted to be active for a minimum of seven years from the purchase date. Software updates are delivered over-the-air by Ford and are covered under your connected services agreement. If you have any warranty-related questions about BlueCruise specifically, call Lasco Ford at (810) 390-5550 or contact Ford Credit directly.
Does BlueCruise work in Michigan winters?
BlueCruise requires clearly visible lane markings and functioning external sensors to operate—which means heavy snowfall obscuring lane lines, significant ice buildup on sensors, or whiteout conditions will cause the system to disengage and return control to the driver. In normal Michigan winter conditions—cold temperatures, light snow, wet roads—BlueCruise continues to function when sensors are clear and lane markings are visible. The system is also improving in this area with each software version update. As a general rule: if you can see your lane lines and your sensors are clear, BlueCruise can engage. If conditions are severe enough that lane lines are buried in snow, that is exactly when you should be driving manually anyway.

at Lasco Ford.
Ask us to route your test drive through a Blue Zone. We will show you exactly what hands-free highway driving feels like—on I-75 or US-23, right from our lot in Fenton. Lasco Ford stocks a wide selection of BlueCruise-equipped F-150, Explorer, and Expedition models.
Ford BlueCruise is a driver-assist feature and does not replace attentive driving, driver judgment, or driver need to control the vehicle. BlueCruise requires an active plan or trial. Only remove hands from steering wheel in designated Hands-Free Blue Zones. Always watch the road and be prepared to resume control. See Owner's Manual for complete details and limitations. BlueCruise operates on pre-mapped controlled-access highways; coverage may vary and is subject to change. Lane markings must be visible and sensors must be unobstructed for system to function. BlueCruise availability varies by model year, trim, and configuration—hardware must be factory-installed and cannot be retrofitted. On select trims, BlueCruise hardware must be selected at time of vehicle order. Confirm availability on specific vehicle with Lasco Ford before purchase. Consumer Reports score of 84/100 based on Consumer Reports active driving assistance systems testing, 2025. BlueCruise 1.5 Automatic Lane Change currently available on 2026 Ford Explorer and 2025 Mustang Mach-E only. Pricing: 90-day complimentary trial included with eligible new vehicle purchase; $49.99/month or $495/year subscription plans available; $2,495 one-time purchase available at time of new vehicle purchase on eligible models, provides minimum 7 years of service, non-transferable to another VIN, can be rolled into vehicle financing.
